Pilot Buzz: Prognosis Good for NBC's Medical Mystery

Inching closer to its upfront presentation to advertisers next week, NBC executives have apparently turned their attention to the network's crop of drama pilots. A medical mystery drama is looking like a good bet for a pickup, according to the Hollywood trade papers. The show stars Neal McDonough ("Boomtown"), Christopher Gorham ("Jake 2.0") and Kelli Williams ("The Practice") as part of a team of doctors who diagnose baffling medical cases.

The still-untitled show comes from Paramount TV and NBC Universal Television Studios (formerly NBC Studios). Bob Cooper, Scott Vila, Jason Horwitch ("The Pentagon Papers") and Michelle Ashford ("Boomtown") are the exec producers.

'Revelations,' 'Cure' Get Go Ahead from NBC

NBC is set to go forward with at least two new dramas for the 2004-05 season, as the Peacock has given series orders to its drama pilots "Revelations" and "The Cure."

As for "The Cure," Neal McDonough ("Boomtown") stars in the project, about doctors who unravel medical mysteries. The series, which comes from Paramount Network Television, Bob Cooper's Landscape and NBC Universal Television Studios, is expected to receive a typical 13-episode order for a fall launch.

Christopher Gorham ("Jake 2.0"), Anna Belknap ("The Handler"), Kelli Williams ("The Practice"), Troy Winbush ("The Replacements") and Clare Carey also star.

It's understood the search is underway for a showrunner to take over for Michelle Ashford, with Rene Echevarria ("Ricochet") considered the frontrunner for the job. Jason Horwitch ("The Pentagon Papers") created the series and executive produces alongside Landscape's Bob Cooper and Scott Vila.

Excerpt from Neal's interview with Lance Smith on CMT's "Top 20 Countdown":

LS: So, what about the future? Any more bad guys?
Neal: Not so bad. Right now, I'm doing a new series for NBC. It's an untitled medical mystery/drama. Kind of like the character on "Boomtown" - he has his flaws. But, he's pretty much the hero of the show and figures out these mysteries and saves the world.
LS: Are you going to throw anybody around?
Neal: Actually, I did. I threw somebody around last night, when we were shooting. I'm always getting in fights. I can't help it. It's the Irish in me.

CK: You've been on NBC before?

Neal: The doctor is in

Hyannis homey Neal McDonough, who the critics thought was boffo in ``Boomtown,'' will be back next season in an NBC medical mystery that he describes as `` `CSI' meets `ER.' ''

McDonough will star as a doctor who heads up a team of epidemic experts who are deployed when there's an outbreak of SARS or some public health scare.

``It's been pretty scary researching this,'' Neal told the Track. ``There are actual teams like this who are deployed but the public isn't aware of it. Because, of course, if news leaked out, there would be public hysteria.''

The actor, who says he will ``infuse as much Boston'' into his new character as he did in ``Boomtown,'' said when he and his bride, Ruve, return from their belated Hawaiian honeymoon, the producers will cast his team. Filming begins in March.

Neal was back in Boston this week to headline the Mass. Film Bureau's media op the other day where he and MFB exec Robin Dawson revealed plans for the bureau's annual black-tie Oscar Night bash at the Wang Center Feb. 29.

This year, the bureau will honor some deserving film industry type with the Massachusetts Citizens Filmmaking Award.

``It's always great to raise awareness of the good work that the bureau is doing to get Hollywood to come to Boston,'' he said.

Other local Hollywood types heading home for the Academy Awards throwdown include Neal's ``Boomtown'' and ``Band of Brothers'' brethren, Donnie Wahlberg; ``Crossing Jordan'' dad Ken Howard; and ``Mystic River'' bad boy Kevin Chapman.

Tickets cost $150 per person and can be reserved at 617-523-8388. But if you want to break bread with the boys at a divine dinner beforehand, the price goes up to $500 each.

Neal McDonough is up for an NBC leading role

He won rave reviews for his work as District Attorney David McNorris on the NBC series "Boomtown." So the network is negotiating with Syracuse University drama graduate Neal McDonough for a new series.

He's up for the leading role in an as-yet-untitled medical series. The pilot has been green-lighted by the network.

Meanwhile, the actor returns to the big screen, following the disaster of "Timeline" last fall, in a remake of "Walking Tall," which MGM releases nationwide on April 9.

In the new version, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays the Buford Pusser role. However, he isn't a sheriff, but is a retired soldier. The setting no longer is Tennessee but Washington state.

McDonough is cast as the bad guy, a wealthy man who was Johnson's high school rival.

'Boomtown' Star Back in NBC Fold

Neal McDonough, who played hard-living District Attorney David McNorris on "Boomtown," is trading the law for a different on-screen profession in an NBC pilot.

McDonough is in negotiations to play the lead in an untitled medical mystery, according to The Hollywood Reporter. NBC ordered the pilot from NBC Studios, Paramount TV and Landscape Entertainment contingent on its cast; signing McDonough will likely remove that hurdle.

In addition to "Boomtown," McDonough's credits include "Minority Report" and "Band of Brothers." He'll next be seen in a remake of "Walking Tall" opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
